If not a father, then at the very
least a governing figure of the Surrealist and Symbolist movement, Gustave Moreau
is celebrated in this exhibition. The former residence of the painter, this
building was turned into a museum following his death in 1895 and was a mecca for
many influencial painters in the period between the two World Wars. There is a
certain romantic and mystical air surrounding the works on display. Influenced
by the Pre-Raphaelite movement in England, Moreau created paintings of fantasy
and mythology that had a certain poetic melancholy. Of particular interest is
Moreau's fascination with the 'Femme Fatale', and he dipicts her in numerous
guises; as Salome, Eve, Delila, a sphinx, vampire, virgin, harpy and as The Lady
with the Unicorn.
