A short walk north of the Louvre museum is the immensly ornate Opéra Garnier. Designed and built in 1875 by Charles Garnier, the Opéra Garnier has become the place to come to see ballet, and is home to the Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris. Some small scale operas are still performed here, but the numbers are dwindling since the opening of the Opera Bastille. Tickets for a performance range from 30 to 380 FF, with the cheaper seats sometimes having a restrictive view of the stage. Tickets for ballet performances at the Opéra are hard to come by, but you can visit the splendid interior for a fee of 30FF, which includes the auditorium, where the domed ceiling is the work of Chagall. The entrance fee also includes admission to a small on-site museum.
